First, we had a training day with our guides, Rainier Mountaineering, learning to climb with crampons, ice axes and ropes, as well as practicing self-arrest and other safety techniques. The second day we climbed to Camp Muir, at about 10,000 feet. We had an early dinner and slept in a converted shipping container before arising at midnight for the summit attempt. We climbed through the night with headlamps, arriving at “Disappointment Cleaver” just before dawn. It was the coldest part of the night. We pressed on, breaking through the clouds into brilliant sunlight before reaching the summit of 14,411’. After high fives and some snacks, we descended all of the way to the lodge at the base.
