Mt. Popocatepetl, outside Mexico City, is an active volcano which at the time had a height of 17,879 feet. Since then, the volcano has exploded and the height is now 17,802 feet. This was a technical climb with crampons and ice axes. We were roped together in groups of four as we ascended the glacier. The first day was spent learning to use the equipment. The climb was done in a day – departing at 4 am and getting down at 7 that night. It was a long day and we should have done more acclimatization. After the climb, we spent a day at Chitchen Itza exploring the pyramids.
