XIII 2001: Belize
A night in Belize City eating royal rat followed by a day of diving, then into the mountains, where we stayed at Pooks Hill jungle lodge. From there, we rappelled 300 ft into a cave, and followed a system of rivers and caves the led to a football field size chamber full of Mayan artifacts; broken pots, skulls with teeth filed to represent status, and the skeleton of a young girl, crystalized into the cave floor. On our final day we went canoeing and visited the capital, whose pronunciation we shall always remember: “Bel-Mo-Pan!”
