The first trip with Ken Deemer leading was one of the toughest (at least on an age-adjusted basis!) We began with two days of training with Exxum Mountain Guides. We learned knot tying, belaying, rock climbing, and rappelling overhangs.

Days three and four were the approach and climb. We were blessed by a break in the weather; one of the nicest days of the summer! After passing through a verdant forest, there was a steep rocky climb to the saddle between Middle and Grand Tetons, where we spent the night.

After a 3 am wakeup call, we began the ascent with headlamps. We divided into groups and each made its way to the summit. There were several sketchy moves with lots of ‘exposure’. Finally, we reached the point where there was nothing above us but sky. High fives and jubilation ensued. Realizing that the climb was only half over, we began the descent. There were many long, overhanging rappells. At the sadle, we learned that there were some ankle and knee injuries. This slowed our descent considerably. We missed our dinner celebration and the last group didn’t emerge from the trail until after 1AM! Spirits were lifted, however, as Gene and Jack were waiting with pizza and beer.

In spite ot the long days that cut into our partying and celebrating, a strong bond developed among us. We formed teams, learned new skills, helped one another, and reached new personal heights. Mountains bring out those qualities.
